The desk

Three people, one room, two evenings a week

Cold Open is not a publication with a masthead. It is three people who kept having the same argument in a pub near Cardiff Central and decided that writing things down with timestamps would settle it. It has settled almost nothing, which is why the site still exists.

Ffion Llewellyn

Editor · keeper of the minute log

Ffion spent nine years as a sound engineer for radio drama before she ever wrote about a game, and it shows in every log she files: roughly a third of her timestamps are about audio. She is the reason the desk has a rule against reviewing anything through laptop speakers, and the reason Log 041 spends four paragraphs on a corridor that contains nothing.

She writes the openings for horror and adventure titles, edits everyone else's prose down by about a fifth, and maintains the master log file that all seven archive entries are cut from.

Owen Bray

Endings · strategy and racing

Owen is the one who plays things to completion, which at this desk is a job description rather than a hobby. He takes on the final-hour visits for most logs because he is the only one of the three with the patience to reach them, and he teaches an evening course in film editing that has quietly shaped how the site talks about pacing.

His logs are the driest and the most useful. He once described a critically adored ending as "a competent hour of housekeeping", and the desk has never let him forget it, mostly because he was right.

Rhiannon Teague

Settings, access, and everything in menus

Rhiannon works in a library in the north of the city and joined the desk in 2021 after sending in a complaint about a log that ignored a subtitle bug entirely. She now checks every game's options screens before the stopwatch starts, and each published log carries her configuration note at the top.

She logs shooters and anything with a difficulty curve worth arguing about, and she is responsible for the site's least popular editorial position: that an unskippable opening cutscene is a design failure regardless of how good it is.

How it runs

The unglamorous part

We meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Tramshed Tech, where the desk rents one room with three chairs and an unreliable radiator. A log takes one evening to record and usually two more to finish, because live notes need context that only becomes obvious a week later.

Marks are set by whoever logged the window, then challenged by the other two before publication. If the challenge succeeds, the mark changes before anyone sees it; if it fails, the objection is written into the entry as a dissent. Four archive entries currently carry one.

Costs are shared three ways: hosting, the room, and games. Nothing is paid for by anyone outside those three people, and there is no plan for that to change, because the moment it does the method stops being credible.

44

Logs since 2020

Seven are published in the current archive. The rest live in the master file and are being edited into shape at a rate of roughly two per month.

9

Marks changed after publication

Each one is dated and initialled in the entry. Seven of the nine were prompted by a reader pointing at a specific timestamp.

How to get us to change our minds

Point at a minute. That is genuinely the whole procedure. A note saying a log is unfair will be read and filed; a note saying that at minute 52 the game teaches the thing we claimed it never teaches will be checked the same week, and if you are right the entry changes with your initials attached.
